Printable Electronics Troubleshooting Checklist

How to Use This Checklist

Work through the sections in order and write your answers down as you go. That last part matters more than it sounds: a written record of what you tested and what changed turns a vague complaint into a diagnosis. It also prevents the most common waste of time in home repair, which is repeating the same test three different ways instead of moving on to the next one.

Each section ends where the risk rises. If a step tells you to stop, stop — the checklist is designed so that everything before that point is safe to attempt without specialist tools, and everything after it is not.

Before You Touch the Device

  • Write down the device model, charger type, and the exact symptom.
  • Note whether the issue began after a drop, liquid exposure, heat event, update, or battery swell.
  • Back up important files first when the device still powers on safely.
  • Describe the symptom in terms of what you observe, not what you think is broken. “No light on the charger and no fan noise” is useful. “The motherboard died” is a guess that narrows the search too early.
  • Check whether the device is still under warranty. Opening it may void coverage that would have replaced it for free.

Low-Risk First Checks

  1. Test the power source, outlet, charger, or cable before opening the device.
  2. Look for loose connectors, dirt, broken plugs, or obvious settings mistakes.
  3. Check for simple pattern clues such as no sound on every input, only on Bluetooth, or only when the battery is low.
  4. Use the shortest test that confirms the next decision instead of repeating the same trial.
  5. Swap one variable at a time. A different cable, a different outlet, a different input — but only one change per test, or you will not know which change mattered.
  6. Try the device with everything disconnected: no peripherals, no dock, no external display, no memory card. Accessories cause faults far more often than owners expect.
  7. Note whether the fault is consistent or intermittent, and whether temperature, movement, or time since power-on changes it. Intermittent faults that follow physical movement point to connectors and solder joints.

Narrowing It Down by Symptom

  • Nothing at all — no light, no sound, no heat. Confirm the power source first, then the cable, then the connector on the device. Only after those three is the device itself the suspect.
  • Powers on, then dies. Usually a battery that cannot hold voltage under load, or a protection circuit shutting down a fault. Note how many seconds it survives — a consistent interval is a useful clue.
  • Works only when plugged in. The battery is the suspect, not the charging system.
  • Works only at a certain angle or with pressure applied. A physical connection problem: connector, ribbon cable, or a cracked solder joint.
  • Started immediately after an update. Software until proven otherwise. Look for a rollback or recovery option before opening anything.
  • Gets hot, then misbehaves. Thermal. Check airflow, vents, and dust before assuming a component has failed.

Stop Immediately If You See These

  • Swelling, smoke, spark, burning smell, or unusual heat.
  • Liquid residue, corrosion, or repeated short power cycles.
  • A repair path that now needs soldering, board probing, or battery removal you cannot control safely.
  • Any exposed mains-voltage section inside a power supply, television, or amplifier. Capacitors in these hold a dangerous charge long after the device is unplugged.
  • A screw or connector that will not move with reasonable force. Something is still holding it, and force at that point breaks the thing you were trying to save.

What to Bring Into a Diagnostic Request

  • The model name and any known storage or battery history.
  • What you already tested and what changed the symptom.
  • Whether the device contains important school, work, or customer files.
  • The charger and any cable or accessory that is part of the problem.
  • Any passwords or unlock codes needed to power the device up and test it after service.
  • Whether the device has been opened or repaired before, and by whom.
